Use the rate from your jeweller's board or bill. Rates change every day.

How jewellery price is calculated

Metal value = Weight (g) × Rate per gram for that purity

Price = Metal value + Making charges + 3% GST on both

Example: a 10 g, 22K chain when the 22K rate is ₹9,200 per gram, with 10% making charges:

Item Amount
Metal value: 10 × 9,200 ₹92,000
Making charges: 10% of ₹92,000 ₹9,200
Subtotal ₹1,01,200
GST: 3% of ₹1,01,200 ₹3,036
Total ₹1,04,236

If you only know the 24K rate, choose Pure (24K / 999) above and the calculator converts it to your purity.

Gold purity: 24K, 22K, 18K

Karat Hallmark number Pure gold
24K 999 99.9%
22K 916 91.6%
18K 750 75%
14K 585 58.5%

24K gold is too soft for most jewellery, so jewellery is usually 22K or 18K. Coins and bars are usually 24K. For silver, 999 is fine silver and 925 (sterling) is common for jewellery.

Tips before you buy

  • Buy hallmarked jewellery. The BIS hallmark shows the BIS logo, the purity (for example 22K916) and a 6-character HUID code, which you can check in the BIS Care app.
  • Ask for making charges separately on the bill. They differ from shop to shop and by design, and are often negotiable.
  • Check the weight on the bill, including any stones: stones should not be charged at the gold rate.
  • Compare the all-in price per gram (shown above) between shops, not just the making charge percentage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the 22K price from the 24K rate?

Multiply the 24K rate by 91.6 ÷ 99.9 (about 0.917). If 24K is ₹10,000 per gram, 22K gold is worth about ₹9,169 per gram. Jewellers often round their 22K rate slightly differently, so use their board rate when you have it.

Is GST charged on making charges?

Yes. When you buy jewellery, 3% GST is charged on the total of the metal value and the making charges.

What does 916 gold mean?

916 means 91.6% pure gold, which is 22 karat. The number is part of the BIS hallmark stamped on the jewellery.

How many grams is one tola?

The traditional tola is 11.6638 grams. Many jewellers now round a tola to 10 grams, so check which one your jeweller means.

Is the information I enter saved anywhere?
