How to calculate the fuel cost of a trip
Fuel needed = Distance ÷ Mileage
Fuel cost = Fuel needed × Fuel price
Example: a 150 km trip each way, so 300 km for the round trip, in a car that gives 15 km per litre with petrol at ₹100 a litre:

Use your real mileage, not the brochure figure
The mileage printed in brochures is measured in test conditions. On real roads, with traffic, AC and luggage, most vehicles give less. To find your real mileage:
- Fill the tank completely and note the odometer reading.
- Drive as usual until the tank is fairly low.
- Fill it completely again and note the litres added and the new reading.
- Mileage = Kilometres driven ÷ Litres added.
Tips to save fuel on a trip
- Keep a steady speed on the highway; hard acceleration and braking use more fuel.
- Check tyre pressure before you leave; soft tyres reduce mileage.
- Carry only what you need; extra weight costs fuel.
- Check the toll cost for your route in advance, since tolls can add a lot on long highways.

Divide the petrol price by your mileage. At ₹100 a litre and 15 km per litre, petrol costs about ₹6.67 per km.
How much petrol do I need for 100 km?
Divide 100 by your mileage. A car giving 15 km per litre needs about 6.7 litres for 100 km; a bike giving 50 km per litre needs 2 litres.
Can I use this for CNG or a bike?
Yes. For CNG, enter the mileage in km per kg and the price per kg. For a bike, enter its mileage and the petrol price as usual.
How is the cost split among passengers?
The total, including tolls and other costs, is divided equally among the number of people you enter. Include the driver if they are sharing the cost.
